When do I need to apply for Commencement 2023 Participation?
You must have completed your “Application for Degree” form and Pay $100 Fee by April 1, 2023; to participate and be cleared by your Student Advisor. Please complete the Application for Degree form here.
If you have missed the participation deadline of April 1, 2023, please email commencement@alliant.edu.
For Doctorate Candidates Only
Program completion dates for doctoral candidates participating in commencement:
- April 1, 2023 – to walk in the ceremony and have their name/dissertation title published in the commencement program.
- After April 1, 2023 – still eligible to walk in the ceremony but doctoral candidate’s name and dissertation title will not be listed in the commencement program.
Important note: Please be aware that a candidate’s program may have more stringent deadlines requiring that candidates not only defend, but turn in their completed dissertations to the library by a specific date to participate in the ceremony. Please check with Academic Affairs to ensure you meet the required deadlines for participation.
Master’s Candidates
Instructions for Master’s Candidates to participate in commencement.
- Terminal Masters candidates must complete all degree requirements (including field training, if applicable) by the end of the year in which they are scheduled to graduate.
- Important Note: Please be aware that a candidate’s program may have more stringent deadlines that the candidate must adhere to. Please check with the Academic Affairs department to ensure you meet the required deadlines for participation.
If you are unsure about your academic status, financial status, or any forms related to completion of your degree program, please contact a representative from your Academic Affairs department. San Francisco candidates should e-mail asf@alliant.edu. Sacramento and San Francisco Law School candidates should contact their local campus.
It’s the day of Commencement. Where do I go, and when?
The Commencement ceremony will take place at the Oakland Marriott City center. Students must check-in by 10:30am at the registration tables outside of East Hall.
Are there any special audience seating arrangements?
Other than reserved accommodation and graduate seating, general audience seating is open.
Can my guests come to the graduate preparation area with me?
We ask that guests and family members not enter the graduates’ preparation area. This area is reserved for graduates only for registering, prepping and receiving final instructions for commencement.
Will graduates be allowed to sit with their guests?
During the ceremony, graduates will be seated in a special reserved seating area. Guests will sit in the general audience seating.
How many guests may I invite to commencement?
Graduates that submitted a participation form for the Friday, May 12th ceremony at the Oakland Marriott City Center by March 12, 2023 will be provided 10 free guest tickets. Graduates will be sent a link to order their guest tickets digitally via Eventbrite by mid-April.
Where can I order Commencement announcements, invitations, etc.?
Announcements and Diploma Frames can be ordered on-line. The announcement/invitation site will go live by March 9th!

What if my guests or I need disability seating and/or assistance?
If you didn’t specify on your participation form, please email commencement@alliant.edu.
Are there any items that I need to bring on the day of Commencement?
You are required to bring your regalia: cap with tassel, gown and, for doctoral graduates only, your hood. If you do not have your regalia, you will not be allowed to walk in the processional.
Will there be any photographs taken of me?
Yes. Photographs will be taken of each graduate as they receive their diploma/hood and after they leave the stage. Students will receive an email following Commencement regarding how to order photos online. Guests will not be permitted to leave their seats to take photos during the ceremony.
How do I order my regalia (cap and gown)?
You must order your regalia online no later than April 2nd by visiting the regalia website: https://alliant.shopoakhalli.com
Return Policy:
1) Regalia is to be shipped back to Oak Hall within 30 days of receiving their order. (include the packing slip)
2) Inside packaging cannot be opened. (Return Sealed As Received) You cannot open & use for photos.
3) You will be responsible for return shipping costs (via: USPS/UPS/FED EX)

Where do I return my regalia?
The regalia is yours to keep and does not need to be returned.
Will there be rehearsals?
No. Rehearsals aren’t held for any Commencement activities.
Where can I store personal belongings during Commencement?
There is no secure place for your personal belongings. If you choose to bring personal items, please give them to your guests to hold onto before the ceremony begins. Alliant and Oakland Marriott City Center are not responsible for any damaged or lost personal items. To keep the ceremony as distraction-free as possible, all phones must be turned off or put on silent. Texting, taking selfies or otherwise using smart phones during the ceremony is also considered a distraction to the speakers, awarding diplomas and other platform activities.
Are degrees presented at the Commencement ceremony?
No. At the ceremony, you will receive a diploma cover but not your actual diploma.
When will I receive my degree?
It depends on when you complete your degree process. Once you complete your degree requirements you should receive it in approximately 6 weeks from that date. Please be sure your correct address is on file with the university to ensure that you receive your diploma in a timely manner.

Where do I park?
Please plan to arrive early, so you are not late for the ceremony. Parking information will be provided closer to the date. We encourage that you and your guests use other means of transportation, such as Uber, Lyft, etc.
